What is Veterinary Internal Medicine?

Veterinary internal medicine focuses on diagnosing and managing diseases that affect a pet’s internal organs and body systems. These conditions often involve the liver, kidneys, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, and endocrine system. Because they can be complex and affect multiple organs at once, internal medicine often requires the advanced expertise of a board-certified specialist.

Internal medicine can help diagnose and manage:

  • Kidney and liver disease

  • Diabetes, Cushing’s disease, and other hormonal disorders

  • Immune-mediated diseases

  • Chronic vomiting or diarrhea

  • Gastrointestinal or respiratory conditions
